Description
English: The Bennet Family Cemetery, 1538 Walden Avenue, Cheektowaga, New York, July 2020. The oldest remaining cemetery in the Town of Cheektowaga, the family plot nestled behind the Cricket Wireless Plaza and the Basil Ford Resale Center on the north side of Walden Avenue near Harlem Road was originally part of the farmstead of Elnathan Bennet (1789-1863), a Vermont native who arrived in the region in 1816 and went on to prominence in the town's earliest history: not only did he serve terms as town assessor and pathmaster, but the wood-frame house where he lived with his wife Jerusha and their nine children was the site of Cheektowaga's first town meeting in 1839. The Elnathan Bennett residence was demolished in the 1950s, but the family cemetery, which dates as far back as the house did, still remains; the most recent burial was that of Charles Bennet in 1980. The cemetery was purchased by the town government in 1988 and rededicated in 2000 with a ceremony presided over by town historian Mary Holtz.
