English: Former university library of the Frederick William University, now seat of the Art History Seminar of the Humboldt University Berlin, located at Dorotheenstraße No. 28 in Berlin-Mitte. It was built 1872 to 1874 by Karl Zastrau to a design by Paul Spieker. The building complex with a side wing and a rear section surrounds an almost quadratic inner yard, which is bridged by an iron skywalk on the right. The facade of the three-story building has a simple design in the Bauakademie tradition, showing only modest late classicist elements. All rooms have cross vaults resting on pillars and columns. A skylighted cast iron main staircase leads to the upper floors. The university library moved to a new building (today's State Library Unter den Linden) in 1922 and the old library building was subsequently used by the nearby Museum of Oceanography on Georgenstraße. After WWII, it was seat of the GDR Department of Industrial Research. The interior of the building was altered and the large library rooms were subdivided. The building has been designated as a historic landmark. |
