Description
Deutsch: Ehemaliges Verbandshaus des Deutschen Verkehrsbundes (Gewerkschaft der Transportarbeiter) am Engeldamm, Ecke Michaelkirchplatz (links), in Berlin-Mitte, erbaut 1927-1932 von Max Taut nach einem Vorentwurf seines Bruders Bruno Taut. Der sechsstöckige Skelettbau aus Stahlbeton war eines von mehreren Gewerkschaftshäusern, die Max Taut in Berlin im Stil moderner Architektur erbaute. Nach Enteignung des Allgemeinen Deutschen Gewerkschaftsbundes wurde das Gebäude ab 1933 von der nationalsozialistischen Deutschen Arbeitsfront genutzt, unter anderem für die Gauverwaltung Berlin der "Kraft durch Freude"-Organisation. Das im Zweiten Weltkrieg schwer beschädigte Gebäude wurde 1949-1951 wieder aufgebaut, wobei die ursprünglich dunkle Wandverkleidung der Fassade durch helle Muschelkalksteinplatten ersetzt wurde. Danach nutzten der FDGB und später Einzelgewerkschaften das Haus, zuletzt nach der Wiedervereinigung die ÖTV. Das Gebäude steht unter Denkmalschutz.
English: The former office building of the German Traffic Union (the union of tranport workers) on Engeldamm, corner of Michaelkirchplatz in Berlin-Mitte, built 1927 to 1932 by architect Max Taut who used an earlier design by his brother Bruno Taut. The six-story skeleton structure of reinforced concrete was one of several union buildings in Berlin Max Taut constructed in the modern architectural style. After the Nazis expropriated the General Federation of German Trade Unions in 1933, the building was used by the German Labor Front (Deutsche Arbeitsfront) for the Gau Office of its "Kraft durch Freude" ("Strength through Joy") programme. Heavily damaged in WWII, the building was reconstructed from 1949 to 1951 and the originally dark wall cladding were replaced with light limestone panels. The house was then used by the GDR Free German Trade Union (FDGB) and later by serveral of its affiliate unions. After German reunification, the transport union ÖTV had its seat here. The building is landmarked.
