Description
Deutsch: Denkmal für den Augenarzt Albrecht von Graefe vor dem Gelände der Charité, Ecke Schumannstraße und Luisenstraße (rechts), in Berlin-Mitte. Das ursprünglich 1882 im Garten der Charité errichtete Denkmal war das Ergebnis der Zusammenarbeit des Bildhauers Rudolf Siemering, der die überlebensgroße, einen Augenspiegel in der Hand haltende Bronzeskulptur Graefes schuf, mit den Architekten Martin Gropius und Heino Schmieden, die die Schauwand mit Rundbogennische in Architekturformen der Neorenaissance entwarfen. Auf zwei farbigen Terrakottareliefs, bemalt von Ernst Bastanier, sind Augenkranke zu sehen, die den Arzt aufsuchen (links) bzw. ihn geheilt entlassen (rechts). Darunter stehen Zeilen aus Friedrich Schillers "Wilhelm Tell": "O eine edle Himmelsgabe ist das Licht des Auges... Alle Wesen leben vom Lichte, jedes glückliche Geschöpf... Die Pflanze selbst kehrt freudig sich zum Lichte." (I, 4) Die Anlage ist als Baudenkmal gelistet.
