Summary
editDescriptionBernard G. and Mafalda D. King House, Buffalo, New York - 20220408.jpg |
English: The Bernard G. and Mafalda D. King House, 209 Nottingham Terrace at Lincoln Parkway, Buffalo, New York, April 2022. This sprawling two-story residence dates to 1956, and with its sleek lines and angles; shallow-pitched, widely overhanging "mourning dove" style roof, and asymmetrical façade, this is a fine example of the middle- to upper-middle-class residential architecture of its era. Note also what Preservation Buffalo Niagara has described as its "trifecta of Modern-era window forms, including clerestory, triangular gable-end, and large floor-to-ceiling windows". Bernard Gustav King (1910-1973), a local real estate developer and close ally of then-Mayor Steven Pankow, was responsible for an abortive and unpopular scheme to have an official mayoral residence (Buffalo's answer to Gracie Mansion, you might say) built in the Park Meadow section of the city. Bernard's wife Mafalda Dolores née LaBella (1913-1988) was a political operative in her own right, a longtime Democratic stalwart and Redevelopment Board member who spearheaded a number of the urban renewal efforts that were changing the face of Buffalo's Near East Side at the time. The Kings lived in the house until 1968. |
