English: Berry Head Fort. The fort on Berry Head was built to counter the threat of invasion by the French up to 1805, when Napoleon turned round and marched right across Europe to beat the Austrians at Ulm and the Austrians and Russians at Austerlitz.
It's an artillery fort, low and squat. Its battlemented gun positions on the landward side now dominate the car park and picnic area. |
