ded quite quarter of a milesince my first visit in 1887. The Trigonometrical Survey Mapwas completed in 1857. Reference to this, and to the re-lative position of the side streams, especially one whichdescends from a small lake 1000 feet above the valley, showsthat since that date, viz., in fifty years, the glacier must haveretreated about a mile. On 24th August 1909 I attempted the terminal ice-fall tothe left of the cave. It involved too much step-cutting, soretracing our steps, we found, about fifty yards to our left,a shallow crevasse which we followed up and soon arrived onthe first ice-field, a tract about half a mile square, coveredwith boulders, debris and gravel, with a few roches moutonnes.There were very few crevasses, but at the upper end, to thesouth, was the second ice-fall, a mass of seracs with fantasticpeaks and spires, knife-like edges, towers and miniaturedomes. THE KASHMIR MATTERHORN 157 left to right and climbing over the extensive lateral moraine,I ascended a steep grassy slope, gradually rising abovethe seracs and the glacier-polished cliffs which form theirlateral boundaries. The flowers here were most beautifuland varied. Among the heaped-up rocks the blue poppygrows and thrives. In places the hillside was golden withragwort. As a contrast, ever and anon a little knoll is passed,azure-blue with forget-me-nots. In the hollows, the pinkand the deep red and white pedicularis with its curly-tailedflowers, or the pale yellow variety with calceolaria-likeblossoms, the sky-blue Jacobs ladder and the dwarf eveningprimrose are abundant. Mauve geraniums with flowers 2inches across, and the petals charmingly pencilled, areuniversal.
