Summary edit

Description
English: Beyond the Veil Christian Ministries, 285 Masten Avenue at Laurel Street, Buffalo, New York, April 2020. A stout brick building in the English Gothic style, this was originally the home of the First United Brethren Church, one of the first congregations of that denomination in Buffalo, which grew out of the revival meetings held in the 1860s, '70s and '80s by the charismatic Rev. John Hill. The small frame chapel they erected on this site in 1888 was replaced in 1925 with the larger building seen here. The influx of African-American residents into the church and the surrounding neighborhood beginning in the 1950s split the congregation into opposing factions, with one decamping for a church in suburban Tonawanda and the remainder continuing to worship here until their 1976 merger with St. Andrew's United Methodist two blocks down Masten Avenue. Beyond the Veil has occupied the building since about 2016.
