editDescriptionBiHac Fethija mosque.JPG |
English: The building of Bihac's Fethija Mosque was probably built in the XIV century as the St.Anthony Church - though it might even be contemporary to the nearby 1266 Dominican monastery.
It was converted in a mosque and named the Fethija (after fath, victory in Arabic) following the Ottoman takeover of Bihac in 1592 by the army of the sanjak-bey of Segedin, Hasan pasa Predojevic. The building was refurbished with the removal of the apse at the east end. The Fethija Mosque became the model for further mosques built in the Krajina region, with an elongated prayer hall, tall windows and a two-level gallery (mahfil). Its Gothic belltower was used as a minaret until 1863, when it was demolished due to its poor conditions and replaced with the current minaret on the same site and with the same stone (bihacite light limestone). The mosque once hosted 9 gravestones of Medieval Croatian noblemen, serving in the region between 1519 and 1565, with epitaphs in humanistic and gothic Latin, and adorned with armorials. They are now preserved in the National Museum of BiH in Sarajevo |
