At the time of the preparation of the last biennial report, planswere under way for an extension and additions to Pier 46, to provideimproved passenger and cargo accommodations for the new steamsliipsof the Grace Lines. It was decided, however, that it would be inadvis-able to continue to use Pier 46 for this service and that Pier 35 wouldbe more suitable after making the necessary improvements. In accordance with this program, Pier 35 was extended by theconstruction of an addition 78 feet in length and 200 feet in width.The substructure is of reinforced concrete on precast concrete pilesand the shed is a timber structure. At the inshore end of the piermodern passenger accommodations were provided by the constructionof a first floor lobby and baggage room and second floor waitingrooms and baggage inspection gallery. A reversible belt conveyorwas installed for transferring baggage between the inspection galleryand the first floor and an elevator was provided for the use of pas-sengers.

REPORT OF BOARD OF STATE HARBOR COMMISSIONERS 15 The pier as extended has a length of 1053 feet on the east sideand 895 feet on the west side. As most of the passenger ships willberth on the east side, an elevated gallery was constructed extendingfrom the waiting rooms to the outer end of the pier, across the endand back on the west side a distance of 324 feet. Two adjustable pas-senger aprons were installed and continuous windows extend the entirelength of the gallery. To permit of transferring cargo to and from the between deckscompartments of the ships, four adjustable cargo aprons and two fixedchutes were constructed. Incidental facilities provided consist of addi-tional offices, commissary, linen and stationary rooms, etc. Thesefacilities together with the waiting rooms and baggage rooms were con-structed by the boards employees, the remainder of the work beingdone by contract.
