Description
English: Cross-bedded sandstones in the Mississippian of Kentucky, USA.

These are quartzose sandstones of the Big Clifty Sandstone, an Upper Mississippian unit forming the "cap rock" or "roof" of Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, the longest cave on Earth. As of fall 2022, 426 miles of cave passages have been explored and mapped. The sandstone is not readily soluble in water, so it protects the underlying cave passage systems from erosion. Mammoth Cave itself is developed in Mississippian-aged limestones.

The tilted layers in the picture are crossbeds. Cross-bedding forms in a one-directional current by wind or water.
