Hô Chi Minh somme le roi du Laos d'abdiquer et crée un gouvernement communiste. Jusqu'en 1950 il soutiendra le mouvement Lao Issara nationaliste et indépendantiste puis en 1950 le Pathet Lao, d'obédience strictement communiste. En 1945-46, les unités Viêt-Minh, aidées par les Japonais et les Siamois gêneront la reconquête française. (On ne connaît pas de courrier spécifique mais des billets de banque "Lao Issara" ont été imprimés à cette époque).
