Summary edit

Description
English: A binnacle salvaged from SMS Emden, at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne.

The sign says:

SMS Emden, a Dresden class light cruiser, was built for the Imperial German Navy and commissioned in July 1909. It spent the majority of its career in the German East Asia Squadron, based at Tsingtao in northern China. In 1913 Emden came under the command of Captain Karl von Müller.

Emden was the fastest cruiser in the squadron. In August 1914 Müller suggested to Admiral von Spee that Emden be detached for independent operations in the Indian Ocean rather than remain with the German squadron as it headed for South America en route to Germany.

The binnale housed the ship's magnetic compass. With the development of iron-clad warships from the 1850s, magnetic deviation of the compass needle became an increasing problem. The binnacle incorporated adjustable correcting magnets and screws to help keep the ship on course.

The shrapnel scar on the column was caused by a shell fragment during Emden's engagement with HMAS Sydney on 9 November 1914. The German ship sunstained extensive damage before Müller ran it aground on North Keeling Island to save his crew.
