Description
English: Bird's-foot-trefoil (Lotus corniculatus) Also known as: bacon and eggs, butter and eggs, hen and chickens, Dutchman's clogs, lady's fingers, lady's slipper, granny's toenails and Devil's fingers. It is known as Bird's-foot-trefoil because it produces seedpods arranged in a ‘bird's foot’ pattern and its five leaflets appear trifoliate. The other frequently used name, ‘bacon and eggs’, refers to the vibrant red and yellow/orange colour of the flowers when they begin to open. Bird's-foot-trefoil is highly toxic to humans when eaten although it has been used traditionally in a compress to relieve inflamed skin.
