Text Appearing Before Image:
scaled to thetop of it we scared away a number ofturkey buzzards that had been watchingour ascent, and it was evidently theirnesting place, as we discovered traces ofold nests and a good many bones of thehapless denizens of the plains. We start-ed several of the big boulders at the edgerolling and plunging down, and, thoughmost of them broke up in their downwardcareer, they stopped only when, after agreat plunge, they settled in the bed ofthe river. Sometimes as they thundereddown they would startle a rabbit fromhis repose, and off he would scamper ingreat affright. But it was getting nearsundown and we were miles from ourwagon, and even when we reached thatwe would be ten miles from home, so weset out on our return with spirits notlacking, but appetites sorely pressing. Themiles of climbing up hill and down hillin the pure air had done us more goodthan months in a gymnasium, and when, long after dark, we reached our home inFresno town, what a supper we did eat.Charles Elmer Jenney. 92

THE BENGAL TIGER. (Felts tigris.) The Bengal Tiger (Felis tigris) inhab-its the hotter regions of Southern Asia, but the species is found with certain colorvariations throughout the lower levels ofall Asia from Siberia to the River Eu-phrates and as far south as Sumatra andJava. Next to the Hon it is the strong-est and most ferocious of carnivorous an-imals, and, on account of the heavilywooded country in which it lives beingdensely populated, the Tiger is even moredestructive of human life. In Bengalalone three hundred and forty-seven per-sons were reported killed by Tigers in asingle year, and this in spite of the bestefforts of the government and people tomitigate the evil by poisoning, huntingand trapping. Mr. William T. Hornaday, who huntedTigers on his collecting trip in India, says in his book, Two Years in the Jun-gle, that only a limited number ofTigers, and those of the old and decrepitsort, ever kill men at all, but once theyhave tasted human flesh they continue tokill until
