The Whitkthroat. 63 nest is always flimsy, for I liave taken examples almost as stoutly built as thatof a Sedge Warbler; nor is the nest always situated in so apparentl)^ perilous aposition as a bunch of nettles, for I have often taken it from the top of a clippedhawthorn hedge partly overgrown with ivy ; but it is most frecpientl) found lowdown in bramble or dense but loose vegetation and more often than not near thefoot of a thick hawthorn hedge. The nest is usually Hghtl)- constructed of dried stalks of plants and grasseswith here and there knots of spiders silk or sheeps wool; the lining is composedof fine bents and horsehair: it is generall) very deep. Of ten nests in ni)collection, obtained during two consecutive years, two are interesting; one onaccount of its unusual size, the diameter of the interior of the cavit)^ measuringnearly three inches, and thickh lined with black hair ; the other has the wallsrather thickly edged with sheeps wool
