DescriptionBirkett Fell - geograph.org.uk - 1106736.jpg |
English: Birkett Fell Wainwright calls this summit Hartside as does the Harveys map but the Ordnance Survey assigns this name to the col (from where this photo was taken) leaving the actual 756m summit unnamed. The fell was named Birkett Fell in 1963 after Lord Norman Birkett who lead the campaign against raising the level of Ullswater by making it a reservoir. Apparently a cairn commemorating Lord Birkett does bear the inscription "Birkett Fell". Lord Birkett was also a judge at the Nuremberg Trials. |
