Description

Going down Westbourne Road in Edgbaston.

This is the City South Campus of Birmingham City University in Edgbaston. Also known as Westbourne Campus.

I once went here when it was the UCE, in the previous building (when I was in my last years of Primary School for a day - can't recall why we went here though).

Before the UCE, it was the Birmingham Polytechnic Campus in Edgbaston.

Lodge near the University. Grade II listed.

Red brick; tiled roof with ornamental ridge tiles and a big central ribbed chimney stack. Roughly cruciform in plan with a gable to the road half timbered with brick nogging and 2 arched panels of blue Japanese sunflower tiles. In the angle, a hip roofed porch. Half hipped gable towards the drive with elaborately pierced bargeboards and terracotta finial. The former lodge to Oakmount, dated 1879 and inscribed REC, for Richard Chamberlain, Joseph's brother. Almost certainly J.H. Chamberlain and showing a move towards Shaw's and Nesfield's Domestic Revival. The roof folds over the hipped w. gable, with its canted bay and tiny traceried window above between half-timbered panels, sw porch, and chamfered nw projection. Big chimney with flutes twisted halfway up.
