Satul Cuconeștii Vechi, a trăit o adevărată tragedie între anii 1975-1978, când odată cu construcția hidrocentralei Costești-Stânca, o bună parte a satului a fost sortită peirii, iar străvechea vatră a cuconeștenilor datată documentar de la 1428 a fost acoperită de apele lacului de acumulare.
Rezervația cultural-naturală "Cuconeștii Vechi" are un statut special și constituie unul din cele mai importante sit-uri culturale și arheologice din Republica Moldova.
Pe vatra satului au fost găsite rămăşiţele unei staţiuni din paleoliticul mijlociu, distrusă în mare parte de ape. Tot aici au fost identificate vechi aşezări umane datând din paleoliticul târziu şi o aşezare tripoliană.
