Summary edit

Description

Black carbonaceous sandstone from the Pennsylvanian of Ohio, USA. (5.0 cm across at its widest)

The Pottsville Group is a Pennsylvanian-aged cyclothemic succession in eastern Ohio that contains nonmarine shales, marine shales, siltstones, sandstones, coals, marine limestones, and chert ("flint"). The lower Pottsville dates to the late Early Pennsylvanian. The upper part dates to the early Middle Pennsylvanian. The Lower-Middle Pennsylvanian boundary is apparently somewhere near the Boggs Member (?).

The rock shown here is a black sandstone. The coloration is from organic matter. Minor muscovite mica grains are present.

Stratigraphy: float from a little below the Poverty Run Limestone (maybe ~0.5 meter below), lower Pottsville Group, upper Morrowan Series, upper Lower Pennsylvanian

Locality: roadcut on the northern side of Rt. 16, immediately west of the Rt. 60 to Rt. 16 west-bound entrance ramp, eastern Irish Ridge, ~1.6 air miles northwest of the town of Trinway, northern Muskingum County, eastern Ohio, USA (40° 09' 22.62" North latitude, 82° 02' 03.54" West longitude)
