Summary edit
DescriptionBlackpool Balloon Tram No.711, Rigby Road, Blackpool.JPG |
English: Blackpool Transport "Balloon" Tram No.711 was built in the early 1930's as part of a fleet of 27. They were built to replace older vehicles such as the "Dreadnoughts" and Standards. All but 2 survive in some form or another, though many have been heavily rebuilt. This one retains it's original streamlined ends but has acquired modern indicator headlights, bus-type seats and windows, and a rubber bumper. In 2011, it was modified for continued use on the tramway following it's upgrade to Light Rail status, and has received widened door platforms and a new purple and white livery since this photo was taken. In 2014, it was announced this car would be visiting the National Tramway Museum at Crich, Derbyshire, on an initial loan period of two years, though this may be extended as the Modernised Balloons see chronic lack of use in Blackpool thanks to the success of the new Flexities. |
