Summary edit

Description
English: Blackpool War Memorial Blackpool War Memorial is dedicated to those who fell in both world wars and in subsequent conflicts. The 90ft (27m) high granite obelisk stands on the seafront close to the Metropole Hotel and is a Grade II listed structure. It was unveiled by Brigadier T. E. Topping, D.S.O., on Armistice Day, 11th November 1923. In the background is the Metropole, the only hotel in Blackpool strictly on the seafront - the others lie beyond the tram tracks on the Promenade or beyond. Opened in 1785, and originally known as Baileys Inn (later Hotel), it was along with Forshaw's (now the Clifton) at the forefront in accommodating wealthier visitors and developing the Resort's early tourism. It was also the venue of Blackpool's first Town Council Meeting, in April 1876. In 1912 a new West wing was opened extending the Hotels' capacity to nearly 200 bedrooms.
