Summary
editDescriptionBlaisdell Concert Hall, King Street and Ward Avenue, Kakaako, Honolulu, HI - 52263937311.jpg |
English: Completed in 1964, this Modern concert hall was designed by Merril, Simms & Roehrig as part of a larger cultural and convention complex known as the Honolulu International Center until 1976, when it was renamed in honor of former Honolulu Mayor Neil S. Blaisdell. The concert hall features a boxy and largely unadorned rectilinear massing clad in concrete panels wrapped with lanais featuring arched openings, a broad concrete roof with a coffered ceiling over the front entrance, decorative blue geometric screens at the entrances made up of intersecting arcs, and balcony-like features at windows on the side facades. The concert hall, being one of the best examples of modernism as applied to a public building in Honolulu, is sadly endangered by a proposed renovation that would greatly alter the building’s exterior, adding glass curtain walls, and massively altering the entrances and their unique, character-defining, and significant geometric screens. Additionally, the plans call for the demolition of the adjacent Neal S. Blaisdell Center and Blaisdell Arena, irreparably damaging the Saarinen-esque arena and destroying what is left of the 1960s portion of the Blaisdell Center. Hopefully, a design far more sensitive to the original design of the modernist structures will be carried out. |
