Description
English: On 30 December 2021, one of the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites captured multiple phytoplankton blooms off the coast of Argentina. In this area of the South Atlantic Ocean, it is common to observe blooms that extend for hundreds of kilometres. Between December and February (the period between late spring and early summer in the southern hemisphere), conditions are optimal for phytoplankton reproduction thanks to long periods of sunshine and a bountiful supply of nutrients from the Patagonian coast. Blooms are indicators of the health of a marine ecosystem. As such, their monitoring is a key component of effective management of coastal and oceanic resources. The Copernicus Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 satellites provide continuous, high frequency water quality monitoring over coastal areas.
