Description

Scarus coeruleus specimen on display as part of the exhibit "Sailing for Science: The Voyage of the Blossom", hosted by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States.

The three-masted sailing ship Blossom left the United States for Africa, the South Atlantic, and South America on a speciment collecting expedition in 1922. It returned in 1926 with more than 12,000 specimens.

Commonly called the blue parrotfish, this is a tropical marine fish common in the Caribbean. At its adult size, it averages 12 to 30 inches in length, although specimens as large as 47 inches have been found. It generally weighs about 20 lbs. It is uniformly blue with a yellow spot on its head.

Blue parrotfish are found on coral reefs. They have a cartilaginous beak which they use for scraping algae off rocks and for grinding up crustaceans they find in the sand.
