Vom OLOPHANTEN über den GEQUETSCHTEN zum ELEFANT
Bereits im 16. Jahrhundert befand sich an der Ecke Sternstraße/Kasernenstraße, unmittelbar am Sterntor, ein Gasthaus mit dem Namen IHM OLOPHANTEN. Es gehörte zu den wenigen Gebäuden, die das verheerende Bombardement der Stadt im Jahre 1689 überstanden. 1726 wurde das Haus „von Grund auf neu“ errichtet und stand bis zur Zerstörung 1944.
Zwischenzeitlich trug das Haus den Namen ZUM GEQUETSCHTEN, nachdem die Jesusfigur eines bei einer Prozession mitgeführten Kruzifixes durch eine allzu schwunghafte Türöffnung „zerquetscht“ worden war.
Bis 1951 wurde das kriegszerstörte Gebäude neu errichtet und wiederum als Gastwirtschaft eröffnet. Nach einem Umbau im Jahre 2018 trägt das traditionsreiche Haus wieder den Namen ELEFANT.
