Accession# 77-56-E Book, Script, Naval Officer's Club, Iron Bottom Bay. The book is one of nineteen from the collection of VADM Harold G. Bowen USN. VADM Bowen had a long and distinguished career in the Navy including serving as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Research and Development. During World War II he served as a destroyer commander in the Pacific Fleet and participated in combat operations against the Japanese. The book is from the Iron Bottom Club which was located at Purvis Bay, Florida Island within the Solomon Islands chain. The club was an officer's recreation club to which officers would come between the engagements around the Solomon Islands during the Battle of Guadalcanal. The club dedicated a Memorial Plaque on the 20th of March 1944, "In Memory of Officers and Men of The United States Navy and Allied Navies who gave their lives/ Iron Bottom Bay 1942-43." A large number of ships were lost during the Battle and the bay became known as Iron Bottom Bay to reflect the loss of lives and ships. The memorial is still situated at Purvis Bay but the club building is no longer there.
