הגן הבוטני בפדובה, שוסד בשנת 1545, בהתאם להחלטת הסנט של הרפובליקה הוונציאנית, אשר שלטה בעיר פדובה. הוא הגן האקדמי העתיק ביותר בעולם, שלא שינה את מיקומו מאז הקמתו. (לעומת הגן הבוטני בפיזה, אשר הוקם לפניו אבל החליף את מיקומו בעיר פיזה. המבנה הארכיטקטוניי ואופי המדעי של הגן הבוטני נשמר מאז תחילת המאה ה-18. המבנה יוצא הדופן של הגן נקבע על מנת לעמוד בדרישות המדעיות של קיום ניסויים, פעילות לימודית ואיסוף פרטי הצמחים.

המבנה של הגן היה למודל למוסדות דומים באיטליה ובעולם: מ-Leida ועד ליסבון, כולל בערים אופסלה וברטיסלבה.

קומפלקס הגן הוא בעל ערך מדעי, היסטורי, אמנותי וטבעי יוצא דופן מוגדר באמצע של המרכז ההיסטורי של פדובה, בין הבזיליקות הגדולות של סנט אנתוני וסנט יוסטינה, באזור עירוני הכולל, בסביבה הקרובה, כמה מתחמים של ערך היסטורי ואמנותי גדול כמו פראטו della Valle, האכסדרה וOdeo Cornaro, פונטקורבו פורטה וחומות עיר המאה 16th, במרחק קטן ממקום מושבו ההיסטורי של אוניברסיטת פדובה וממונומנטים העיר החשובות ביותר (Cappella degli Scrovegni, Palazzo della Ragione, Piazze and Battistero).
