Description

The 2013 Bournemouth Air Festival will probably go down in history as the one with the best weather. every day was good, some better than others. Personally I think Friday was the best - warm and sunny, but lots of dramatic cloud.

A great selection of aircraft was present but some old favourites were missing - no Breitling Wing Walkers for example and no big jets apart from the wonderful Typhoon - always one of the highlights. Sunday was not so good either, no Red Arrows and the Vulcan and Sea Vixen both retired due to mechanical problems - not to be helped I know.

It also seemed to many of us that the aircraft were flying further out to sea - the biggest contrast was between the Lancaster and the Flying Fortress - the Flying Fortress flew much closer and really filled your lens, the Lancaster was a full zoom stretch away. There was often a big lull between aircraft too - again I suspect something that is probably unavoidable.

The sun is always a problem at Bournemouth when you take photos from the cliff tops, I think another year I may try the pier again - or maybe hire a boat?

I tried out three different cameras this year. A Nikon V1, a Sony Nex7 and a Panasonic FZ200. I expected the Sony to produce the best images due to its bigger sensor - and when it hit the spot it was unbeatable. What really surprised me was just how good the Nikon V1 is. Virtually every single shot from it is a 'keeper' - very impressive. The Panasonic bridge camera did quite well too but was out classed by the others but proved useful for its 600 EQ zoom plus wide angle lens.

Most of my airshow photos have been processed in Snapseed for speed and a bit of added drama.

All in all an enjoyable Air Festival weekend - with good company from Steve and Paul on the Saturday.

Well done to the organisers and participants for putting on a terrific show.
