i met my first live mccain supporter (presumed), or rather his truck, with nascar sticker and everything. a rare experence [sic] in these parts. ah freedom. this is so freakishly unusual to see here in portland. to read that obama and mccain are polling about equal nationwide just makes clear how much of a bubble we live in. it's a nice bubble, for sure, but groupthink makes for uneasiness and a sense of helplessness about participating in any broader dialogue about "change" -- everybody i know is already on board, pretty much. is nascar truck dude what we're up against? i have 0.0001% confidence that anything i could ever say or do would budge this guy's mind, at least in the context of a campaign. we're swimming in our own kool-aid. same thing in 2004: i think there were no more than 5% of yards in inner SE Portland that did NOT have at least a kerry/edwards sign up. many had multimedia installations. and then: boom: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lY_CI-7EGb8 |
