The western tower, of ashlar, dates from the fifteenth century; the rest of the church is from C.1770. It was rebuilt in brick by John Carr of York. The older church had fallen into disrepair, and by 1767 parts of it had collapsed. Permission was obtained to rebuild the church on the old foundations, except for the tower which was modified so that the first floor was turned into a gallery to serve as the Strickland family pew. (This is reached by a winding stair in the south-west corner of the nave).

The tower is of three stages with a battlemented parapet and 18th-century pinnacles. There are two bells. The nave has a typical coved ceiling and Gothick cornice. There is a double chancel screen with columns and Gothick capitals, forming a baldaccino for the altar. Beyond the chancel lies the Strickland mortuary chapel separated by an iron railing. There are several large monuments.

There is a late twelfth century tub font with round headed arcading at the western end of the nave. The font cover dates from 1950. The church has a wooden lectern featuring a turkey, the symbol of the Strickland family.

Luckily the church escaped the Victorians' passion for church restoration, but in the early twentieth century new seating arrangements were introduced. The old box pews were replaced with Georgian style pews, and central heating was installed.
