Text Appearing Before Image:
ity came and withthe rifles muzzle almost touching the bears back Ipulled the trigger. Down with a thud he went, all ina heap. The dogs just swarmed over him andstretched him out: he was not dead, he wis too toughto give up so easily and struggled gamely to his feet. This, however, was the lasteffOTt, for he was draggeddown again and after a few final struggles gave up,fighting to the laBt. Philosopher had never let go his hold on Ihe bearsthroat and it was some time after the kill before Icould persuade him to do so and let me examine hiswounds, which while painful were none of them at alldangerous. The quarry weighed, I should judge, 350 pounds orover and was in fairly fat condition. The pelt was sobadly mauled that we did not care to take it. It was still early in the day, for the final scrimmagedid not last so extraordinarily long, but as so many ofthe dogs were wounded and required attention wedecided not to hunt any more that day and turnedour steps in the direction of M.s house.
