Description
English: As seen from the corner of Main Street and Coe Place in Buffalo, New York on an October 2021 evening: a faded ghost sign adorns the south side of the former Buffalo Electric Vehicle Company building (now the Artspace Buffalo Lofts), the only clearly legible element of which is a nameplate for the Breitwieser Printing Company. The sign's weathered appearance belies its relatively recent vintage: though Breitwieser was founded by brothers Frank and William Breitwieser in 1948, its offices were not located in this building until the last four years of the company's existence, from 1998 (when a fire destroyed their previous headquarters on Broadway in Cheektowaga) until 2002 (when owner Jim Breitwieser, son of aforementioned co-founder Frank, retired). Among other publications, Breitwieser's presses were put to use printing the revived version of the German-language newspaper Der Volksfreund. Earlier photographs of the same sign identify the faded portion underneath the Breitweiser nameplate as pertaining to the FM Sound Equipment Corporation, a seller of portable radios, record players, and audio recorders whose shop was located in the building in the 1950s and '60s. Look closely and you can barely make out the word "hi-fi" near the right margin about halfway down.
