Description
English: Looking north from the center of the Jamaica-bound (eastbound) platform the Briarwood (Briarwood–Van Wyck) subway station in Briarwood, Queens. Note that the support beams here are thick and widely-spaced compared to the more narrow beams at the north end of the platform. This may be to support either the Van Wyck Expressway or Queens Boulevard crossing over the station, although it is hard to know for sure (without further research). The Van Wyck Boulevard subway station was opened in 1937, while the Van Wyck Expressway was constructed in the late 1940s and early 1950s. It is possible that the wider pillars were added to underpin the station at this time, although this is just conjecture.
