English: Bridge number 4 over the Stroudwater canal, Stonehouse The former railway bridge crosses the canal at an oblique angle. The arrangement of struts and piers was necessitated by the engineering challenges involved in building a bridge substantial and stable enough to carry several tonnes of locomotive and wagons safely across the canal.
