English: Bridge over the West Fen Catchwater Drain There's a field just beyond this bridge, which grows strawberries. It's just turned 25 degrees and I could just down some strawberries and icecream right now. Sadly it's too early in the year.
Drains are an essential part of Fenland and without them farming would be impossible. However there is a problem of shrinkage, exacerbated by modern industrialised farming resulting in massive loss of top soil as it blows away in the wind. It is said that in the long-term the Fens will have to be returned to their natural pre-agricultural state. |
