c/n PAC/W/19450 Built in 1963 for the Royal Air Force with the serial XR658. Initially served with No.7 Flying Training School, then with the College of Air Warfare and finally transferring to No.6 Flying Training School at Finningley in March 1971. In October 1971 it was overstressed and written off when the canopy disintegrated and hit the tail, causing a loss of control. It was used for ground instruction with the maintenance serial 8192M before becoming a travelling exhibit with the RAF Exhibition Flight. It was as a travelling exhibit that I saw it at Newmarket Racecourse on 2nd April 1983. In July 1988 it was sold to Jet Heritage at Bournemouth who then exchanged for it Swift XF114 with the North East Wales Institute of Higher Education at Connah’s Quay. It eventually moved to Prees Heath in Shropshire before joining the museum here in September 2016. RAF Manston History Museum Manston, Kent, UK 30th April 2022 |
