Viking Copper Alloy Plain-Ringed Pin |
||||||||||||||||||||
Description |
Ringed Pins functioned as simple dress fasteners and consist of pins with separate swivel rings inserted in their heads. Several different types of ringed pins are known, differentiated from one another on the basis of the form of their pinheads and rings. The Hunt Museum collection has two examples of the plain-ringed class (HCA 523 and 520) while the others are kidney-ringed in form; all four examples feature polyhedral headed pins. The pin is engraved as a decoration. It has been suggested that plain and kidney-ringed pins were manufactured in Dublin from where many were excavated. Evidence indicates that the plain-ringed type was being produced largely in the mid-tenth century, while the kidney-ringed form developed during the late tenth-century and continued use throughout the eleventh. |
