Title |
Brooch |
|||
Description |
English: Copper alloy enamelled animal brooch, hare/hound series. Complete except for the enamel in the centre cell. The pin is sprung between two lugs 5mm apart. The surviving enamel in the front and back cells is blue; the colour of the dot for the eye is unclear. There are traces of ?solder (probably a white metal strip attached to the surface) around the edges of the enamel cells on the body and around the eye. Length 37mm, height (paw to ear tip) 21mm, plate is 2mm thick. The animal is probably a dog - based on tail, snout and paw shapes; however the crouched legs are more like the hares in this group. See discussion by Hattatt 1987, 240 about the difficulties in distinguishing the two groups, where he suggests that dogs are much less common than hares. It is also suggested that these are a British type. |
