Title
Brooch
Description
English: An incomplete Roman copper-alloy oval plate 'Centre-boss' brooch (AD 200-350).

This brooch is oval in plan and has a central cell. The empty oval cell for the centre-boss measures 16.2mm in length, 12.6mm in width and c. 2.6mm in depth. The base of the cell is green and on one side an off-white greyish material may be paste or adhesive.

Surrounding the central cell are two concentric zones divide by a raised concentric ridge. Both zones are decorated and were probably punched or rouletted. However, due to wear and damage it is largely unclear.

The rear face is flat and has a pin-lug and catch-plate. The pierced lug is 8.1mm in length and has a width of 1.9mm. There is a copper-alloy axis bar through the hole which secures the remains of a copper-alloy spring including an internal chord.

The incomplete catch-plate is missing the curled-over part the secured the pin-tip. The catch-plate has a length of 9.6mm and width of 2.8mm. In side view it is 'D'-shaped.

This brooch is reddish brown and corroded bright green. It has a patchy dark green patina at the rear and has traces of gilding at the front.

Length: 32.0mm; width: 23.5mm; thickness of plate: 3.5mm; thickness including catch-plate: 9.9mm. Weight: 8.65g.

Similar brooches have been published (Hattatt 1987: 253-254, fig. 79, refs: 1210, 1211, 1212, 1213).
