Description
English: Brownlow House, Windsor Avenue, Lurgan Lurgan town was originally founded by the Brownlow family who were English Planters during the reign of James 1 (1603-1625). Brownlow House, formerly called Lurgan House, is Lurgan's grandest secular building. Erected by Charles Brownlow, to the design by Scottish architect William Henry Playfair, it is constructed in the Elizabethan style using sandstone imported from Scotland. Most of this building dated from 1836 though it also contains parts of the older house, dating from the 17th century. Of particular note at Brownlow House are the tall-spiralled chimney pots, the tower with lantern and dome. It stood in an estate of some 259 acres, including a 59-acre man made lake. It is reputed to have 365 rooms. The present Lurgan park was part of the Brownlow estate, which included the lake, was gifted to the people of Lurgan in 1909.
