Description

BRUTTIUM, Rhegion. Circa 415/410-387 BC. Æ Hemiobol (6.61 gm).

RHGINON, laureate head of Apollo right, hair gathered into a roll and tucked into laurel wreath / H within linear circle; laurel wreath around. Struck as an alternative to the rare silver hemiobols, also marked with denominational value H, this coin is in the refined style of the lion's mask/Apollo head tetradrachms (ANS 657-663) by the maestro della foglia which replaced the fully classical and severe Iokastes series (ANS 635-642), This issue no doubt owes its extreme scarcity to its having been struck on a heavy weight standard that failed to correspond to the trend, both in Italy and Sicily, towards lighter weights and a more fiduciary character of bronze coinages.
Date circa 415/410-387 BC
