Lancienne maison des orfèvres.Daprès une gravure de Bruxelles illustré, par Rombaut. (Collection de M. Th. Hippert.) traduction latine du testament de Jean Jacobs dans les diplômes dAubert le Mire(Mirâcus). M. le Dr Van den Corput possède un intéressant manuscrit intitulé Voyagede C. Charlier en Italie, fait aux frais de la fondation Jacobs en lan 1790. Lauteurraconte que les élèves du collège belge étaient obligés de revêtir un habillementridicule. Ils portaient, sur un habit noir à collet bleu, une toge dont les manchestraînaient presque jusquà terre. Sur les épaules on leur attachait un ruban de lalargeur de quatre doigts, de même que la toge. A lextrémité du ruban étaient fixées

Charlier dit quaprès avoir reçu, le 5 juin 1790,le bonnet de docteur des mains de larchidiacre de léglise cathédrale de Bologne, ilrepartit pour Bruxelles le 8, et y revint le 18 décembre. A son retour, conjointementavec ses compagnons Crampagna, Albrechts et Van Bellingen de Branteghem, il seprésenta chez les doyens des orfèvres « pour avoir le payement de la somme de45 florins, qui compétait à chacun deux à titre de viaticum, selon le testament dufondateur Jacobs ». Après des démarches infructueuses qui se prolongèrent pendantprès de deux ans, ils sadressèrent au bourgmestre. Il leur fut répondu que la fondationJacobs était fort obérée et ne pouvait leur payer à chacun que 25 florins au lieu de 45.Ils acceptèrent cette offre à titre de transaction. La première maison des Orfèvres, qui sappelait aussi le Miroir, était surmontéedune vieille tour dans laquelle on gardait les privilèges
