Description
English: Bryn Aber the former home and final resting point of Capt Vivian Hewitt Vivian Hewitt (1888-1965), a very tall and gangling figure, was a brewing millionaire, a pioneer airman,(he made the first solo flight of the Irish Sea in April 1912), racing car driver, butterfly hunter, bird fancier (strictly of the feathery kind), and, especially in later years, a really serious eccentric. His building of the high prison-like walls around Bryn Aber in 1939 did not go down well with his Welsh neighbours. Rumours abounded about this strange Englishman and in 1940 the house was raided by the Amlwch Police and the local Home Guard when someone suggested that the large tanks built within the walled garden contained oil for the nighttime refuelling of German U-boats. The tanks were emptied but found to contain only water. Hewitt was buried at his request in the garden of Bryn Aber.
