Wzmiankowany 1235; prawa miejskie przed 1250 (1247?); w XIII–XVII w. kilkakrotnie stol. księstwa brzeskiego (do 1675 własność Piastów śląskich); od 1329 lenno Czech, dzielił losy polit. Śląska; w XVI–XVIII w. ośr. polskości i centrum oświat. (m.in. gimnazjum, druki pol.); od 1945 w granicach Polski.
