English: Built in 1896, the Rustic-style Buck Spring Lodge was designed by Richard Howland Hunt, son of Richard Morris Hunt, for George Vanderbilt, and his wife, Edith Stuyvesant Vanderbilt, to serve as a summer hunting lodge. The lodge was built of chestnut logs with a rough-hewn stone foundation, and was accessed via the shut-in horse trail, which ran through heavily vegetated groves of rhododendron from the Biltmore Estate near the Biltmore House, and a driveway built in 1910 to the ridge top from Candler, North Carolina, which today has been designated as North Carolina Highway 151, and served the Buck Spring Lodge and nearby Pisgah Inn. The house featured electric lighting, indoor plumbing, a water heater, telephone service, courts for tennis and croquet, and an ice house, which were modern conveniences also available at the larger Biltmore House. The lodge was utilized as a retreat by the Vanderbilt family until 1958, when Edith Vanderbilt died, after which the lodge and the land it sat upon were sold to the State of North Carolina, which subsequently gave it to the National Park Service to allow for the construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The lodge, which the Park Service did not wish to maintain, was torn down in 1961, leaving only a few scattered remnants of the lodge, and an overlook with benches near a parking area on the ridgeline just south of Mount Pisgah.
