| Description |
English: The Bucks County Hospital, built on the almshouse property in 1869. Located at the intersection of Almshouse Road and Route 611 in Doylestown Township, Pennsylvania. By 1869 the almshouse was overcrowded, and the elderly, sick, and insane were housed together with the paupers, and the incurably insane were housed in a separate building known as "the cells," where they were kept perpetually chained in unsanitary conditions. The hospital more appropriate accommodations, and allowed the county Directors of the Poor house those with physical and mental health needs an a separate facility. The facility remained in use as a home for the indigent, and later the elderly, until 1866, when its residents were moved to Neshaminy Manor on the same site. The hospital building is now used by other county agencies, including the Planning Commission. |
