Description
English: The Buffalo Federation of Neighborhood Centers, 274 High Street at Lemon Street, Buffalo, New York, June 2020. One of the only remaining buildings of its age and style in Buffalo's Fruit Belt, the building stands two and a half stories in height and sports a high mansard roof, round- and segmental-arched windows, and cast-iron pilasters ornamenting its first-floor storefront that all testify to the French Second Empire style of architecture. It's housed the offices of the Buffalo Federation of Neighborhood Centers since 1982, but it's spent most of its life as a drugstore: the earliest record of it is in the 1869 Buffalo City Directory, where it's listed as the home of J. C. Pickelmann's grocery, a business that would later grow into just one branch of Pickelmann Bros., which covered the whole block and came to specialize in fresh-cut flowers; they were out of business by 1895 and in 1897 it reappears as home of another drugstore, A. J. Werner & Co., which would move the next year to the building on the corner of Elmwood and West Delavan Avenues that's now home to Great Wall Chinese Restaurant. At the time of its 1979 inventory for the New York State Historic Trust, it was the home of Woldman's Drug Store as well as a laundromat.
