English: Building 1 was one of the first buildings erected in 1938 to accommodate the growing needs of the U.S. Public Health Service that had been operating out of one building in downtown Washington, D.C. It is considered the iconic image of the National Institutes of Health as the core NIH campus grew. Photograph by Ernie Branson
