Description
English: A December 2020 view of the office building at 360 Delaware Avenue (corner West Tupper Street) in downtown Buffalo, New York. The history of this building is one of the most unusual in Buffalo, having undergone several distinct phases of architectural metamorphosis over the years. Its core dates to 1868, when it was built as the home of hatter and furrier Gustavus Bassett (1814-1898); it later served as The Avon, a rooming house. In 1923, it was altered and expanded into offices with a retail space below which was home to Parsons, a women's clothing shop, and later to Hodge Florists. Tenants in the upper-story offices principally included insurance agencies, but also the offices of architect Frederick Backus in the early part of his career. However, most of what's seen in this picture dates to its most recent renovation, in 1991, in which a new façade with distinctive Postmodern design elements was added. Witness specifically the round arches crowning the door and several of the side windows, the cornice at the roofline, and the rustication on the ground floor, all elements of earlier architectural styles reimagined along Modernist lines. Postmodernism is exemplified even more exquisitely on the rear addition seen at left, where a front gable serves as a sort of pediment crowning yet another round-arched window, and brick columns of remarkable similarity to their Classical forebears frame a side entrance. The building's principal tenant today is the local branch of Legacy Studios, a photography studio specializing in school pictures.
